The basics about vertigo

Understanding Vertigo

Vertigo manifests as a spinning sensation or a loss of balance, even while stationary. Individuals with vertigo may experience sudden dizziness and instability. Nearly 40% of American adults will experience vertigo at some point in their lives.

Vertigo is a symptom of various underlying conditions rather than a disease itself. It's crucial to work with your chiropractor or healthcare provider to identify and treat the root cause of your vertigo.

What causes vertigo?

Vertigo is often caused by inner ear balance dysfunction or brain problems. Below is a list of causes of inner ear dysfunction, brain problems that result in dizziness, and vertigo:

  • Standing up, which can cause temporary low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Certain medications (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, etc.)
  • Prolonged bed rest, leading to spinal and muscle tension
  • Hyperventilating
  • Sudden head movements
  • Head trauma
  • Ear surgery
  • Migraines
  • Syphilis
  • Shingles around your ear
  • Perilymphatic fistula (inner ear fluid leaking into your middle ear)
  • Otosclerosis (a middle ear bone growth condition)
  • Infection spreading to the brain
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Brain tumor
  • Stroke

These risk factors for vertigo increase the chances of facing vertigo symptoms in the future:

  • Age over 50
  • Female gender
  • Muscle weakness
  • Head injury
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Surgery around the ear

2 Types of Vertigo

There are 2 main types of vertigo, essentially separating the inner ear root causes from the nervous system root causes:

Peripheral vertigo is the most common type of vertigo, which occurs due to a problem with your inner ear or vestibular system, both of which are responsible for your balance. Subtypes of peripheral vertigo include benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), labyrinthitis, vestibular neuritis, and Ménière’s disease.

Central vertigo is less common, which happens when a medical condition impacts your brain, such as a tumor, infection, or head injury. Central vertigo often results in more severe symptoms like difficulty walking.

What’s Normal vs. What’s Not

Vertigo may be common, but it’s not normal. If you’ve experienced more than one episode of sudden-onset dizziness, you should seek medical attention from a chiropractor right away. If it’s an emergency, go to the ER.

What’s normal: When you stand up, your blood pressure slightly lowers for a few seconds. Sudden drops in blood pressure can cause dizziness and lightheadedness, but the blood pressure change when standing should not cause full-on vertigo for the average person.

What’s not normal: Chronic vertigo is cause for concern. If you’re getting dizzy all the time, you should ask your healthcare provider for medical advice or treatment ASAP. Yes, you’re at higher risk of vertigo as you get older, but that doesn’t mean that vertigo is “normal” for older people.

Here are normal symptoms that may accompany vertigo:

  • Balance issues
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Motion sickness
  • Double vision
  • Nausea
  • Hearing loss in one or both ears
  • Ringing in your ears (tinnitus)
  • A full feeling inside your ear
  • Side-to-side eye movement outside your control
